Axis productions is a contemporary circus and physical theatre company developed as the professional arm of Circus Monoxide. Our works span from the poignant to the political. Each bespoke creation is a cohesive integration of the physical world and the dramaturgical foundations underneath it. We develop self driven projects and collaborate with commissioning partners to create tailor made works. These works span the artistic to the commercial, comedy to drama, young to all ages, and across different artistic forms and media. We are driven by the desire to create individual and social change through circus with purpose.
aXis is a project company led by the artistic vision of Circus Monoxide’s Artistic Director, Zebastian Hunter.
We seek funding and presenting partners for the development and performances of our shows. Our portfolio of works are developed with, and produced by Linda Catalano’s company quiet RIOT.
Each production is created with a bespoke team of new creatives and performers to align with the dramaturgical needs of each show.
GLOW is a sculptural, visual art and light circus performance activation that was commissioned by Chadstone The Fashion Capital and District Agency. This new performance, on our bespoke Cube apparatus performs in non-conventional performance spaces, both outdoors and indoors.
The Construct - The Construct expresses the uncertainty of reality and the impermanence of our imagined structures. As a physical metaphor for this constructed reality we built a unique apparatus, a cube sculpture made from welded steel.
Mechanical Mayhem is our new family-friendly production. Using the industrial landscape of Wollongong as our inspiration we created a hilarious and innovative romp with idiot clowns.
This work is an exploration of The Dalfram Dispute and The Nanjing Massacre. Our artistic director, Zebastian Hunter and dramaturg, Jenevieve Chang are exploring the narrative, themes, individuals and events in Australia and China. Our initial research phase has been supported by The Arts Centre Melbourne's AsiaTOPA Lab.
The Metamorphosis, A Circus Adaptation of Kafka’s Novella is a new work by the aXis which explores the narrative and themes of this seminal work. It details a family locked in isolation and processing a sudden tragic transformation beyond their control. The show weaves through how each family member evolves in response to this shocking event and provides a social commentary on capitalism, mental health and the impact of family.
Circus Monoxide has a long history in the Australian contemporary circus landscape. Axis productions aims to restart the engines of our creative factory and reignite our professional engagement beyond the Illawarra region in which we are based.
Axis Productions is located in the Circus Monoxide studio in Fairy Meadow, our productions include some of our professional circus trainers, and is part of our greater vision to become a hub for professional circus in NSW.
Axis performances promote the underlying values that are embedded into Circus Monoxide’s training: inclusion, respect and social change through circus.
