Earthquake can’t shake troupe’s will to perform
"Great eight: Sam Whelan, Corie Hurry, Ali Dabros, Charli Truscott, Mary Weir, Sam Hankins, Vicky Blackthorn and David Deville of the performing group Harvey’s Troupe.
WHEN Charli Truscott lost the option of running away to circus school recently, she formulated a way to develop her flamboyant antics closer to home.
The Wollongong-based performer was due to start her training at the renowned Circo Arts institute in Christchurch earlier this year when a devastating earthquake destroyed the school’s facilities. With nowhere to go, she took it upon herself to inject new life into Circus Monoxide’s emerging professional artists program, Harvey’s Troupe.
‘‘Because of the earthquake, there was a bunch of students stranded in New Zealand not knowing what they were going to do,’’ Ms Truscott said.
‘‘I figured we have the space [and necessary equipment] ... we just need the people to support it.’’
David Deville was one of three people who travelled from New Zealand to join the
rejuvenated troupe, which now stands at eight.
‘‘I might have still been in Christchurch right now if it wasn’t for the earthquake, but all the training spaces, theatres and performance halls were not sound to continue working in,’’ he said. ‘‘We had to look elsewhere and I jumped at the opportunity of doing silly things here in the Illawarra.’’
The troupe is rehearsing full-time ahead of the launch of its new Stopping at all Stations show, which will debut at the Viva La Gong festival later this year."
